Skin Care Ingredients That Are Actually Aging Your Skin or Worse!
We spend a fair amount of time on this blog discussing the importance of using various lotions, creams, exfoliators, and other topical products in your skin-care routines to attain and keep skin that is always healthy, luminous and youthful.
However, not all products are created equal. Some have ingredients that don’t actually accomplish what the product claims to achieve, while others are downright harmful and can, in fact, cause wrinkles and fine lines, or acne, or in extreme situations lead to illnesses, if the chemicals used were dangerous enough (thankfully these severe instances are rare).
There are 3 options for avoiding these unfortunate outcomes. You can always try making creams or masks yourself, but that might end up being a very time-consuming option. You can educate yourself about which ingredients are undesirable and always check the product ingredient list. And yet another option to avoid such situations is to utilize skin-care products other than just topical goods. Such as the anti-aging wrinkle reducing device Silkn FaceTite. It sends low-power RF energy into the dermis of the skin, directly targeting skin deep under the surface to rejuvenate, increase blood flow and cell production, without using any lotions or creams or harsh chemicals.
Now let’s go over those unsavory and some even downright dangerous ingredients that we should all know and avoid!
Sunscreen chemicals: Avobenzone, benzophenone, oxybenzone, octyl methoxycinnamate, and PABA are all very typically used in sunscreen products. They are all free radical generators that can, when exposed to the sun, damage DNA and cause creation of wrinkles, not to mention may lead to cancer!
Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – These are used in many products: shampoos, body washes, cleansers and many of the products that foam. These can lead to irritation and erosion of skin which, you guessed it, can lead to the creation of wrinkles and fine lines. In more severe instances these can cause eye damage, breathing issues and diarrhea.
Resveratrol and/or Peptides – Contained in some anti-aging creams and claim to improve the appearance of wrinkles and even provide general health benefits. The good news is that these ingredients are not actually harmful or dangerous, the bad news is that the jury is still out on whether they actually do what they say they do.
DEA, MEA, TEA – Also foam boosters, they dry out the skin and can irritate and inflame eyes and skin, causing skin aging results. And yet again there may be a risk of cancer involved.
Benzoyl Peroxide – Used in acne products. May irritate and dry out skin, causing premature aging. Unfortunately, the side effects get worse as well may damage DNA and may even encourage tumor development.
Mineral Oil – it forms a sort of a thin layer over skin, clogging pores and rendering the skin unable to “breath”. It can lead to acne and ironically skin irritation and inflammation. So in other words… aging the skin.
Unfortunately, this is a very partial list of all the ingredients that can and do cause issues. It is always best to use products that are widely known to be safe and effective.
